"People think what is thinkable; not what is true"

The commercial world spends vast amounts of money and time asking people why they do things, and then trying to fit in with what they are told in response. The reality for all of us is that few if any of our actions are based on simple logic that we can explain. Most of us are completely unaware of why we do almost anything at all. Yet we keep asking normal people "why" and assuming that they can tell us.

We learned as children that our parents had answers for everything - we asked them "why" and they fed us answers. Authority figures of all kinds also demanded to know of us as children why we wanted an ice-cream, why we were crying, why we did this or that or the other before we knew much about ourselves at all. We all learned to concoct satisfactory justifications for behaviour we had no chance of understanding at all! We constantly had to explain ourselves, when really the honest answer was "I simply have not idea whatsoever".

That is what happens when we are asked "why" as adults.

The very question presupposes that we know the causal explanation, absolutely and without doubt.

Science shows clearly that causal answers are as rare as legs on a fish. 'Why' makes people anxious especially when it relates to them, thier habits, lives, thoughts and behaviour. So they make up 'reasonable' answers or use off-the-shelf responses to make the worrying question go away - and the question remains unanswered and we satisfy ourselves with the shallow response.

The whole, sophisticated and satisfying answer to the question "why" can only emerge from inquiry - and inquiry must start with the answer "I don't know" followed by "let's find out together".
